Honors Physical Science – Katherine Schilling, Instructor
This is an intriguing and challenging honors level course that studies our physical world. This covers everything from atoms and molecules to an introduction to physics, astrophysics, and chemistry for those moving on to chemistry I.
Although physical science is not considered a lab science course, students will be conducting numerous experiments, applications, and projects. In addition to quizzes, tests, labs, and projects students will be required to do a book report each semester. This should be a fun, as well as challenging course for students.
Participation in the MHSRC Science Fair is mandatory. Please do not sign up your child for this course if you do not wish him/her to participate.
Prerequisite: Pre-algebra- no exceptions!
Lab fee: $75.00
Textbook: The Physical World Bob Jones University Press ISBN 13: 978-1591666417
Honors Biology I - Katherine Schilling, Instructor
Biology I is a challenging honors course not intended for the faint of heart. This will be offered only to 9th graders and up. It delves deeply into the zoology, botany, and microbiology of our earth as well as exploring the creation -evolution controversy. An additional study of the major systems of the body will be included.
Students will be required to complete study guides, keep a lab notebook, do research projects, and complete reading assignments. Additional evaluation will include quizzes, tests, and exams. This thorough study gives students an excellent picture of God’s creation.
Participation in the MHSRC Science Fair is mandatory. Please do not sign up your child for this course if you do not wish him/her to participate.
Prerequisites: Physical Science, Pre-algebra

Honors Chemistry I - Katherine Schilling, Instructor
Chemistry is an honors course stressing the marvels of God’s design by exploring creation on a molecular level. Through research and lab study, students obtain a firm grasp of their world by studying organic, inorganic, and biochemistry.
Students will be required to complete worksheets and lab reports as well as reading and research assignments. Additional evaluation will come from quizzes, tests, and exams.
Participation in the MHSRC Science Fair is mandatory. Please do not sign up your child for this course if you do not wish him/her to participate.
Prerequisites: Algebra I, Biology I
Algebra I placement test is required. Placement tests will be given at the MHSRC during the months of April or early May.
Lab fee: $75.00

Honors Chemistry II - Katherine Schilling, Instructor
This course will take topics from the first year Chemistry and apply them to more complex situations. Additional topics will include limiting reagent stoichiometry, atomic and molecular orbital theory, intermolecular forces, solutions and equalibria, acids and bases, electochemistry and redox reactions, nuclear chemistry, and organic chemistry. In addition to reading the text, students will be required to complete worksheets to practice problem solving, participate in laboratory experiments, complete short research assignments, and complete a book report. At the end of the year, students will complete a major research project and present it to the class.
Prerequisites: Algebra II, Biology, Chemistry I
No science fair.
Lab Fee: $75.00
*Students should have a good understanding of logarithms and must have earned a 90 average or higher in Chemistry I.
Students who did not take Chemistry I from Mrs. Schilling must take a placement test. Admission to the class will be decided by Mrs. Schilling based upon performance on this placement test.
Textbook: Advanced Chemistry in Creation, second edition (text only) Jay L. Wile - Apologia Educational Ministries 2010 ISBN-13: 978-1935495239
Note - this is the second edition. The first edition will not be compatible with this course.
Advance Biology- Human Anatomy and Physiology – Katherine Schilling, Instructor
This course is a rigorous follow up course for first year Biology and is recommended for students interested in pursuing any career related to medicine, or students needing a third or fourth science. Course work will require strong self motivation to memorize many terms and complete complex assignments for each system of the body. The reward will be a good familiarity with the structure of the human body which will be invaluable for college preparation.
Lab work will include microscopic observation of various cell and tissue types, dissection of cow eye, sheep brain, sheep pluck (heart, lung, trachea), and a systemic dissection of a rat. Formaldehyde is not present in any specimen. Note: Attendance is critical- please do not sign up for this course if you know your student will not be able to have regular attendance. We will cover much material in each class, and missing a dissection will require ordering extra specimen to make up the lab which will incur extra cost.
Pre-requisites: Biology I and Chemistry I.
